Internet Marketing can be broken down into two major internet marketing categories:

Direct Internet Marketing and Indirect Internet Marketing. However, just as the lines between direct internet marketing and indirect internet marketing have been blurred in print media, they have also been blurred in Internet Marketing-and probably more so.

Direct Internet Marketing is very similar to Yellow Pages usage. People will utilize a search engine like Google and type in a search term like "accident lawyer Denver" to find an accident lawyer in Denver. This is very similar to going to the yellow pages and looking up a "personal injury attorney". The person searching is most likely to choose the bigger ads near the front of the heading, and online they are most likely to click on the site that is near the top of the search results. The biggest similarity between Internet Marketing and yellow pages marketing is that the searcher is looking for the attorney they want or need when they want or need them-which is what makes it "direct" marketing. Of course, there are significant differences between the two media, most importantly the fact that internet usage is growing, increasing the value of internet marketing, while yellow pages usage is declining.

Indirect Internet marketing is analogous to billboard, television or radio advertising. It is often used as "awareness" advertising or "branding" forms of internet marketing. An example of Indirect, awareness or branding advertising that is not internet marketing would be when you are driving in your car and you hear an ad for an injury attorney. While you are not in need of one, the attorney is hoping that if and when you do need one you will remember the advertisement you heard on the radio, saw on the television or on a billboard and give him a call. The attorney could also be hoping that when you see their direct internet marketing ad or ad in the yellow pages the fact that you have heard of them before will increase the likelihood of you clicking on their Internet Marketing ad or calling their phone number.

You can see that these two approaches work well together, but some areas that blur the lines are the awareness advertising in the form of banner ads and the like on the front of the yellow pages, and contextual ads that are supposed to be relevant to the articles, emails or blogs you are reading online can be indirect internet marketing.

Whether or not you knew any of this above before now, the most important question you need to have answered is which types of Internet marketing will work for me?

Direct Internet Marketing-"Winning the search engine placement battle".

If someone is searching for a Honda Accord in Denver online, and you sell Honda Accords in Denver, you would probably love to be at the top of Google where there are thousands of searches for a Honda in Denver online every month, for the keyword phrases "Honda Accord Denver", "Honda Accord for sale in Denver", "Honda Denver", etc. There are 2 ways to win this internet marketing search engine placement battle: Search Engine Optimization (SEO), or Pay-Per-Click Marketing (PPC).

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Internet Marketing

Essentially, if you are winning the Search Engine Optimization contest, your site appears near the top of Google (for example) in the Google Local section or in the organic results on the left side of the page. This is often referred to as the "natural", "organic" or "free" search results. How "free" free is depends on how competitive your keywords are. If you want to be at the top of Google for the keyword phrase "Rodent racing" then you probably only need to build a website with that keyword phrase in it a few times. On the other hand, if you want your site to appear at the top of Google for the search term "Lawyer" you will probably need hundreds of thousands of pages, thousands of links to your site, and tens of hours a week spent on updating the site.

The chances are that the keywords that would suit your business are somewhere in between. To find out more about SEO visit our SEO page. You can also call us for a free internet marketing phone consultation at 303-997-3424.

Pay Per Click Marketing (PPC) Internet Marketing

If you are winning the Pay-Per-Click battle then you are at the top of Google (for example) in the Sponsored Results section at the top or on the right side of the search results page. Google decides who is at the top based on A: How much the business is willing to pay per click to be at the top, and B: How relevant their site is for the keyword search. For example, if you tell Googel you will pay $.10 for every click you receive after someone has searched for “rodent racing” on Google, you will probably be art the top. No one really searches for rodent racing and no one is making a lot of money off of those searches. However, if you wanted to appear at the top for “Mesothelioma” on Google and you offered Google $20 a click, you would probably not appear on the first page, because the highest bid is probably over $50 per click. This is because if a lawyer lands a Mesothelioma case he is likely to make hundreds of thousands of dollars. While there are fewer searches for Mesothelioma than there are for “bankruptcy attorney Denver”, an attorney may only be willing to pay $20 a click for those keywords because a case is only worth a few thousand dollars him or her.

If two businesses are willing to pay the same amount for the same keyword, then Google puts the one higher that is deemed more relevant based on their click through rate. Pay Per Click marketing can become very complicated and result in a lot of wasted money in competitive markets. Indirect Internet Marketing

An example of indirect internet marketing would be Mercedes Benz advertising on the EF Hutton site-or vice versa. By putting banners on websites where the users are likely to fit into your prospect demographic you will create awareness and credibility for your products and or services.
